This is Edie. She was one hour away from being euthanized. Thankfully there are wonderful people out there who are willing to help a scared dog backed into a corner.

Meet Edie, the dog who only needed a hug.

This is Weezy, one of the lucky dogs staying at the no-kill shelter helped out by David Backes.

St. Louis Blues captain David Backes should have been an NHL All-Star, he certainly had the stats to make the team. But he didn’t and it’s a good thing for three dogs from Houston. According to St. Louis TV station Fox2 Now, Backes and his wife Kelly flew 700 miles during the NHL’s All-Star break to rescue three dogs and return them to a no-kill dog shelter near their house. The three dogs that Backes rescued are named Emmitt, Lincoln and Ernie.

It was a long trip but Backes didn’t mind spending part of his break helping these dogs from Texas.

“They have a really big stray population down there,” his wife Kelly told Fox2.

As for Backes, he says he is learning to be a pilot and uses flying as a way to relieve the stress that comes with being a professional athlete. To learn more about the no-kill animal shelter that Kelly and David brought these three lucky dogs to, click here.

This is our golden retriever who found a spot on her sister's dog bed after a tiring game of fetch.

One of the first purchases most new dog owners make is a puppy bed for their new puppy. Think about it – if you don’t provide a puppy bed for the newest member of your family, your new puppy will have to look elsewhere for somewhere to make his puppy bed. In our case, that meant our puppy helped herself to our couch, which had to be replaced just a couple years after we bought it. So to help make sure you purchase the right puppy bed, keep these tips in mind:

- Remember your puppy will become a dog: One of my favorite pictures is of our sweet little lab puppy in a giant bed we bought. But it wasn’t long that she grew into it. Save yourself some money and buy a puppy bed that your new puppy can grow into.

- Buy a puppy bed with a removable cover: This is an important one if your puppy isn’t housebroken just yet. It’s much easier to throw a cover in the wash rather than try and clean up a puppy bed. Replaceable covers will also come in handy if your puppy chews a hole in his new puppy bed.

- Shop around: There are some great websites online that have quality puppy beds as will most of your local pet superstores. One of the best dog beds we ever bought was at Costco when we were grocery shopping. Thankfully it only came in a pack of one.

The dogs are off and running in search for Easter Eggs from our hunt a couple years ago.

A great way to get to know your neighbors and socialize with their dogs is to throw a Dog Easter Egg Hunt. Here are tips to make your dog Easter Egg Hunt a success:

- Send out invitations. A cute way to send out an invitation to your dog easter egg hunt is to attach it to a dog treat like we did (see picture). Our invitations were designed by designer Mitch Pangborn, who came up with the clever idea of making the paw prints Easter Egg.

- Fill large plastic Easter eggs with small dog treats to hide around your yard. Make sure not to use the typical plastic egg to prevent any dogs from choking.

- To make your dog Easter Egg Hunt extra special, buy a few big prizes and put a coupon inside the plastic eggs to redeem the big prizes. It makes opening the eggs a fun part.

- Make sure there’s plenty of water for dogs to stay hydrated as they hunt for Easter Eggs with their owners.

Here’s a moment of full disclosure: We have always been a little self-conscience as to whether our dogs have been a little overweight. We can’t resist but give our dogs a few table scraps or a few extra dog treats now and then. But you can’t help but wonder: Is my dog fat? The last thing we want to do as dog owners is create a fat dog. Daily exercise can help, but here are some tips to detect whether or not you own a fat dog:

- Did you overfeed your dog as a puppy? The realty is, overfed puppies tend to become fat dogs.

- The best sign to get an indication to whether or not your dog is overweight is to check the ribcage. Give your dog a pat on the side and check whether or not you can feel your dog’s ribs. There should be a thin layer of fat over the ribs, but if you can’t detect the ribs at all, that’s a sign your dog may be on the heavy side, if not obese.

- Look down. If there’s not a narrowing at the waist of your dog, chances are that dog is overweight. If the waist is extremely noticeable your dog may be too thin.

If you are concerned at all that you may be the owner of an obese dog, the most important thing you can do is consult your vet. Every dog is different and it’s important to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle for your dog. They will reward your with their unconditional love and loyalty.

This might be the most heart-breaking story of the year. On Thursday, a British soldier and his dog made their final trip home. Liam Tasker and his Springer Spaniel Theo were inseparable, just like any good dog and their owner. On March 1, Liam was on patrol in Afghanistan and was shot. He later died. Theo, the Springer Spaniel, died shortly after according to 9news.com.

Tasker’s mother says she thinks the sadness of losing his master may have killed Theo.

“My honest opinion of this is when Liam went down, Theo didn’t have the comfort from Liam to calm him down. I truly believe when Theo went back on the kennel that that would have a big, big impact because Liam wasn’t there to comfort him and calm him,” Ian Tasker, Liam’s father, said.

“I don’t know why I’m not a vet, I can’t answer that question. I’m not a vet. But I would like to believe he died of a broken heart because of Liam,” Jane Duffy, Liam’s mother, said.

Dog CPR saved the life of this four-year-old Boxer.

Ron Pace is a hero to dog and dog lovers everywhere. When a four-year-old Boxer named Sugar collapsed near the dog trainer, he didn’t hesitate to perform CPR on the dog to save Sugar. It was all caught on video. Here’s more from the New York Daily News:

Pace admitted he did not know how to perform CPR on a dog. The video shows him pushing down on the animal’s chest several times before adjusting its tongue, holding its mouth shut and breathing once into its nose.

“It may have not been the correct way to do it and the way that they teach,” Pace said. ” it’s the outcome that’s what was important.”

After a few more chest compressions and almost two minutes of not breathing, Sugar’s chest can be seen rising and falling again in the video. A few minutes later, with his owner beside him, the dog stands, clearly frightened after his ordeal.

Beast was adopted by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. Beast's Facebook page has over 15,000 followers.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg picked up his adorable new puppy on Sunday, and already the dog has over 15,000 followers on Facebook. Not bad, Beast. The Puli puppy was bought from a breeder in Oregon and here’s what we already know about the adorable Beast, thanks to the Facebook page set up by Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan.

- Beast is a Puli, which is a Hungarian sheepdog. Beast was born on January 10, 2011.

- The Facebook founder’s dog was born in Grants Pass, Oregon but has moved in comfortably with Zuckerberg in Palo Alto.

- Beast enjoys cuddling, loving and eating. The puppy has already conquered stair climbing.

There are many fantastic photos of this adorable puppy on his Facebook page. Zuckerberg made a positive impression on the breeders who sold him his puppy, according to a story on ktvl.com.

“They were really down to earth people,” Szabo said. “So it was nice meeting them in person.”

The next morning Szabo said she went on Facebook, and Beast’s page already had more than 8,000 “likes.”

“This morning we woke up and our e-mail box exploded,” she said. “We tried to keep it quiet but I guess that doesn’t happen with the Internet.”

The Szabos said they are one of the few Puli breeders in the U.S., because the dogs are so hard to maintain. In fact, they said the dogs often end up in shelters because owners don’t realize how much time and effort goes into taking care of them.
