Protecting our Precious Pooches

Our pets give us companionship, unconditional love, comfort and amusement. The best thing we can give back to them is a loving and safe environment.

Ever since a coyote was first spotted around our suburban Detroit neighborhood last year, all of us pet-owners have been understandably concerned. Around the same time the Grosse Pointe coyote sightings were becoming a frequent occurrence, pop star Jessica Simpson’s dog Daisy was taken by a coyote from her LA home. The national headlines sent a wave of fear through all of us, as our awareness was certainly raised by the horrible story.

I used to allow my “boys” to go outside and play for hours on end, with little supervision (our yard is fenced). Once reports surfaced of dogs being snatched in areas blocks from our home, we ceased this playtime. In fact, we do not let them outside without one of us present on the back porch standing guard.

While I wish there was a way for us to have more “control” over this situation, the best thing I can do is to protect my little guys. I researched safety tips to keep our pets safe from coyote snatchings. I hadn’t ever thought of some of the suggestions I came across – and I always figured that because our yard is fenced they would stay safe. Not necessarily true.

Below is a collection of web pages I found that offer the best solutions for keeping our little furry friends free from harm. The Humane Society article provides additional insight into why coyotes are more prevalent in urban areas these days.

I encourage you to read these articles and follow the suggestions. You’ll find it actually takes very little effort to prevent a tragedy.
